From Laid Off to Keynote Speaker: How Losing My Job Set Me Free

Let’s get one thing straight: I did not plan on becoming an entrepreneur.

In fact, if you had asked me nine years ago what my future looked like, I would’ve rattled off a carefully curated corporate trajectory—complete with performance reviews, team-building events, and an ever-expanding inbox. I was the consummate corporate professional. Reliable. Driven. Well-dressed. And quietly… stuck.

Until I wasn’t.

The Corporate Routine That Kept Me Comfortable

Like many high-achieving women, I wore my busyness like a badge of honor. I could juggle deadlines, lead meetings, and navigate office politics like a pro. But beneath the polish and performance, I was shrinking. Pulled in too many directions. Unsure of who I really was outside the confines of a job title or a meeting room.

Still, I stayed. Why?

Golden handcuffs. Security. A salary that whispered, “Don’t rock the boat.”

Then I Got Laid Off—And Everything Changed

There’s nothing quite like being told you’re no longer needed. It stings. And yet, there was this quiet voice inside me—one I’d been ignoring for years—saying:

This is your chance.

For the first time in years, I had space. No meetings, no metrics, no one else’s ladder to climb. It forced me to ask a question I had been avoiding:

What do I actually want?

I Didn’t Rush Back. I Listened Instead.

I had options. I updated my résumé, sent a few LinkedIn messages, and met a few recruiters. But something told me to pause and not accept any of the offers.

Instead of scrambling to another job, I gave myself permission to listen—to my intuition, my exhaustion, and my barely-there dreams.

And what I heard surprised me.

From Corporate to Calling: Reinventing Myself as a Speaker

That tiny voice inside? It had something bold to say:

You were never meant to blend in. You’re here to speak out.

So, I did something I never imagined. I stepped into entrepreneurship.

While I had a business degree, there were no investors, no roadmap. Just a willingness to show up, learn fast, and build a business rooted in identity, image, and impact.

Now? I’m an international keynote speaker, sharing real stories and transformative ideas with audiences of professional women who feel just like I once did—overwhelmed, undervalued, and unsure of who they are anymore.

The Identity Shift That Made It Possible

Here’s what most people don’t tell you: while becoming an entrepreneur is about strategy, a less talked about piece is self-image.

I had to see myself as a business owner before I could act like one. That meant shedding the safety of old identities and embracing the power (and responsibility) of my own voice.

This wasn’t just a professional shift—it was a personal reckoning.

I had to ask: Who am I now? Who do I want to be?

These are the exact kinds of questions I now ask my clients and audiences through Black Sheep Co.'s Authentic You program. Because the truth is: reinvention starts with identity.

What You Can Learn From My Leap

If you’re a woman navigating a thousand roles—professional, partner, parent, planner—you’re probably excellent at managing expectations. But let me ask you something:

When was the last time you focused on your own?

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way:

  • Discomfort is often the doorway to reinvention. Don’t wait for a layoff, or something worse, to give yourself permission to change.

  • Your identity fuels your image. When you know who you are, how you show up becomes magnetic.

  • Impact isn’t about being loud—it’s about being aligned. When your inner clarity matches your outer presence, you become unforgettable.

If you’re an event planner or lead a women’s group, and you’re looking for a transformational speaker who doesn’t just inspire but activates change—I’d love to talk.

My keynote, Lead Your Life: Identity, Image, Impact, isn’t just a speech. It’s a mirror. One that helps women remember who they are—and who they’re here to become.
